2012 Honda Crossrunner VFR800X Review

A rugged adventure bike with added excitement and flexibility; meet Honda's all-new Crossrunner.

The 2012 Honda Crossrunner represents the best aspects of two seperate biking genres: The flexibility and exciting attitude of a naked performance machine with the upright riding position and rugged appearance of an adventure bike.

The Crossrunner is a radical new concept that provides all day comfort and effortless handling in the city, exhilarating performance on the open road and the ground clearance and suspension travel needed to truly bring out the adventurer in you. A 782cc V4 engine provides the Crossrunner with an incredibly smooth power output. Honda technicians reengineered their renowned V4 technology specifically for this bike so that it combines a smooth power surge with the energy of an Adventure bike. Wide handlebars and an upright position have been incorporated to give high levels of stability and manoeuvrability as well as all day comfort and great visibility. The dual layered fairing completes the rugged, purposeful look and benefits the riding dynamics by enhancing stability at higher speeds. The Crossrunner has been created to give riders great flexibility. Designed with pillion in mind, the seat positions the passenger on the same level as the rider, shielding them from the wind and creating a feeling of comfort and safety. With great handling and stability, good ground clearance and ample suspension travel you can take on the bumpiest cobbled roads and dust tracks to get to your destination.

With its 800cc V4 motor the Crossrunner provides a thrilling riding experience, be it for short urban trips or for covering vast distances.

Extensive customer research indicated that whilst buyers liked the appearance and the image of adventure bikes, for some the compromised stability caused by long travel suspension, tall seat heights and dual purpose tyres was a serious deterrent. The Crossrunner offers the best of both worlds by addressing all of these demands.

DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT
• Stability and rider-flattering ease of use were two core design motivations for the Crossrunner project. It was always at the forefront of the design team’s minds that this motorcycle should be performance-focused, yet supremely manageable to cater for a wide skill set.
• The Crossrunner’s smooth, flexible and soulful 782cc V4 engine is specifically tuned for the kind of riding suited to this cross-purpose machine. An elastic, turbine-like delivery and smooth, readily accessible power make it very easy for the rider to find an effortless, flowing rhythm – an attribute always appreciated by the pillion.

STYLING
• The European design team designed a motorcycle that reflects the riding conditions of this new decade.
• The Crossrunner had to be exciting to ride but at the same time easy to master, and the styling of the machine needed to reflect these cross discipline attributes.
• Crucial machine data is provided by a 'floating' instrument binnacle, placed high for optimum visibility at all times.
• The bike's sophisticated styling is accentuated by the high and wide handlebars.

ENGINE
• Liquid-cooled 782cc, 4 cam, 90° V4 engine delivers a smooth curve of power with excellent torque throughout the rev range.
• The traits of the well-proven Honda V4 engine configuration are legendary. Along with the appealing engine note, this distinctive engine architecture provides a smooth curve of power with excellent torque figures from idle to the rev limit.
• To provide both optimum low speed torque and peak power, a highly developed version of Honda's revolutionary VTEC system has been specially adjusted. This technology offers variable valve timing to optimise the degrees of valve opening – a unique proposition in the motorcycle market.
• Crossrunner engineers have laboured to refine these characteristics. Throttle control linearity – the feeling of heightened rider control – was an early design goal and formed an importantly large part of the Crossrunner's development time.
• The net result is a smooth rush of progressive, linear power with abundant torque throughout the rev range and precise control at every parameter of revs, throttle position, gear position and load.• In pursuit of this goal, engineers experimented with several different inlet trumpet shapes and lengths before the optimum settings were achieved.
• The 782cc, quad cam, 90 degree V4 runs an over-square bore and stroke of 72.0 x 48.0mm for efficient cylinder filling via the four-valve, down-draught cylinder heads. The liquid-cooled unit feeds its power to the rear wheel via a six speed gearbox, wet clutch and chain final drive.
• An added benefit of maximising the progressive nature of the torque and power curves is efficient fuelling, resulting in a 348km range from the 21.5-litre fuel tank.

CHASSIS
• An adaptable engine needs an equally capable chassis, and the Crossrunner delivers this with a proven aluminium alloy, twin-spar frame that provides excellent rigidity for when the rider demands more.
• This sportsbike-derived chassis technology is part of the Crossrunner's unique cross-over proposition.
• The design allows a much lower headstock height than traditional adventure bikes, resulting in much improved levels of rigidity.

BRAKES
• With standard-fit ABS, the triple disc braking setup of the Crossrunner is not only powerful, but safe too. Twin 296mm floating discs are arrested by three-piston calipers at the front, whilst the rear 256mm disc brake adopts a twin-piston caliper for precise control.
• Extensive development work with the ratio of master cylinder-piston to caliper-piston ratios has achieved a high degree of rider feel for optimised levels of braking control and heightened aspects of rider feedback.

3R-C
This revolutionary three wheeled battery electric vehicle concept shows what a future minimal urban transport vehicle for one person might look like. The battery electric drivetrain is mounted low in the three wheeled chassis, therefore keeping the centre of gravity low and thus improving stability.

The 3R-C has a clear canopy that covers the driver’s seat while it is parked and not in use. When 3R-C vehicle is in motion, the canopy becomes an enveloping wind-shield that provides the pilot, who sits low in the vehicle, with significant protection from the bodywork and doors.

The high sides of the safety shell seat give greater safety to the occupant, reducing the threat from side impacts and improving weather protection. In front of the driver is a lockable boot area, which gives significant secure storage for luggage or other items. The 3R-C’s designers created a flexible cover that surrounds the upper torso to reduce exposure to bad weather and improving comfort.

The 3R-C study was created by European designers working at Honda’s Research and Design facility in Milan.

2010 Shadow Phantom HONDA accident lawyers info, wallpapers

Honda’s Shadow line of cruisers was kind of falling behind the competition both in terms of performance and looks, so urgent measures were required to refresh the famous name and even add more salt and pepper to it. The solution comes with the all new 2010 Honda VT750C2A Shadow Phantom, a veritable midnight cruiser that not only brings a fresh new style next to Honda’s Shadow Aero and Shadow Spirit 750, but plenty more torque for very little money.

Introduction
The whole idea behind this all new cruiser was to definitely look and feel like a Shadow, while also add a touch of modernity to the already potent powerplant. So the 745cc, liquid-cooled, 52-degree, V-Twin engine featuring a single cam acting on each cylinder’s three valves gets Honda’s Programmed Fuel Injection system with automatic enrichment circuit and one 34mm throttle body. From our experience on previous generation models, this should deliver even more low-to-mid rpm torque and also keeps things lively down the open road. Throttle response should also be instant now and we expect the new engine to feel like it finally got what it deserved.

A veritable cruiser, the Shadow Phantom comes with a wide-ratio five-speed transmission and a shaft final drive, but this is no news considering Honda’s tradition of providing powerful, but also very reliable cruisers.

Just looking at the 2010 Shadow Phantom you notice the 64.5-inch wheelbase and the fact is that engineers worked to provide a fairly long, low and highly maneuverable (for the class) motorcycle, so the center of gravity is very low too. You’ll find the seat positioned at only 25.7 inches from the ground and with all the controls at quick reach, the Shadow Phantom will be as comfortable as a Shadow Spirit, if not even more.

This thing meets the road with 17-inch front and 15-inch rear standard spoked wheels with Dunlop rubber on, while irregularities and bumps are absorbed by the 41mm fork offering 4.6 inches of travel and dual shocks with five-position spring preload adjustability capable of 3.5 inches of travel. For a midsized cruiser, this is more than acceptable. So are the brakes, which are composed from a single 296mm disc with twin-piston caliper up front and a rear drum.

All in all, the 2010 Honda Shadow Phantom weighs in at 549 pounds wet, but we trust in the now more modern engine to make it disappear once the rider opens up the throttle.

Exterior
Along the years, most Honda Shadow models were found as docile midsize cruisers staying truly faithful either to the classic or custom style, depending on model, but the 2010 Honda Shadow Phantom has come to change that and a look at it is all that it requires for you to realize that this is definitely the best looking standard Shadow out there.

The critics will say that this is nothing more than a blacked-out Shadow Spirit 750 and we tend to stand by their side although not totally. This thing was designed as a bobber and the fat wheels, thick fork arms, redesigned handlebar as well as the entire bodywork, blacked-out and matte finishes stand by the bobber (not custom) side of this very attractive motorcycle.

Everything from the small headlight and signal lights to the taillight looks like bought from an aftermarket parts catalog (including the engine) and this adds an expensive touch to the bike. If you’re planning to buy this thing and hate inquiring people, be prepared to deal with them more often.

The Honda Genuine Accessories list includes backrests, a boulevard screen and even synthetic leather saddlebags, but these units will make it more comfortable and practical, not necessarily better looking.

Price
In order to be a completely competitive player in the midsize midnight cruisers category, the Honda Shadow Phantom needs to meet the affordability factor and with a $7,999 MSRP, we believe it does.

• Minimal bodywork and extensive blacked-out and matte finishes.
• New handlebar shape enhances bobber styling.

Law enforcement agencies can now experience what other Honda riders have known all along: Nothing matches Honda's legendary performance, quality and reliability.

Unique Features
= ABS combines with Combined Braking System (CBS) for a wide range of braking and steering control. ABS features an electric-motor-driven modulator that gives quick, precise braking-pressure adjustments and smooth ABS operation. The system incorporates an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) controller, self-diagnostics with an interactive ECU test function and automatic protection against system failure (see Technology Section).
= CBS uses a second master cylinder and a proportional control valve (PCV) to couple the three-piston calipers of the dual-disc front and single-disc rear brakes. Using the front brake lever activates the outer two pistons of the front calipers and the two outer pistons of the rear caliper. Rear pedal engagement activates the center piston of the rear brake caliper and the center pistons of the front calipers, and a delay valve slows initial front brake response to minimize front-end dive.
= A motor-driven adjustable windscreen offers 7.4 inches and 13 degrees of adjustability for greater wind protection and touring comfort. A thumb-operated push-button on the left handlebar operates the windscreen motor. An additional 2.3 inches of manual adjustment is possible by repositioning the windscreen on the mounting brackets.
= New special patrol speedometer is graduated in 2-mph increments above 10 mph.
= Adjustable three-position dual-density solo seat.
= Handlebars raised 25mm and width increased 13.5mm for rider comfort.
= Specialized brackets for lights, sirens, antenna mount and radio/electronic equipment.
= Rear component cover for electronics weather protection.
= Left and right lower engine guards have built-in brackets for mounting accessories.
= Right-handlebar-mounted multi-function switch controls.
= On/off headlight switch.
= 8mm side fairing air-deflector set.

Engine/Drivetrain
= Compact, powerful 1261cc DOHC 90-degree V-4 engine with an oversquare bore and stroke of 78mm x 66mm and longitudinal engine mounting improves power flow and drivetrain efficiency.
= The ST1300P's low overall center of gravity contributes to improved low-speed handling. The 360-degree crank contributes to a very broad powerband. Two engine counterbalancers virtually eliminate primary and secondary vibration. Both gear-driven counterbalancer shafts are installed in the lower crankcase to the left side of the crankshaft. The first shaft is driven directly by the crankshaft at a 2:1 ratio. The second shaft is positioned below the first and is driven in the opposite direction by the first balancer shaft's drive gear. The combination of these two balancers ensures a supremely comfortable ride.
= Aluminum-composite cylinder sleeves are high-pressure-formed from sintered aluminum powder impregnated with ceramic and graphite. The composite sleeves provide better wear resistance and superior heat dissipation compared with conventional sleeves.
= Large 31mm intake valves and 27mm exhaust valves feed a combustion chamber with a 10.8:1 compression ratio.
= Direct shim-under-bucket valve actuation system ensures high-rpm durability and allows 16,000-mile valve-maintenance intervals.
= Four 36mm throttle bodies.
= High-pressure Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers fuel at 50 psi into each injector (see Technology Section).
= Fuel is delivered through eight holes in each injector, producing a very fine spray and a highly combustible air/fuel charge for maximum combustion efficiency and power.
= PGM-FI combines a sophisticated throttle sensor, advanced 3-D digital fuel-injection and ignition mapping and precisely metered fuel delivery to produce smooth and linear throttle response.
= ECU-controlled closed-loop emissions control system utilizes two oxygen sensors to constantly deliver a precise air/fuel mixture, while two exhaust catalyzers further reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen.
= Auto-enriching system is integrated into PGM-FI module, optimizing the air/fuel mixture on cold starts and eliminating the need for a manual choke.
= 4-into-2 stainless-steel exhaust system features a pair of attractive, triangular-section 5.4-liter mufflers with stainless-steel heat shields.
= Dampers on the transmission mainshaft, clutch and driveshaft reduce noise, vibration and driveline lash.
= High-output 660-watt air-cooled alternator is relocated between the cylinder banks, contributing to a shorter and more compact engine design.
= U-shaped aluminum radiator has excellent cooling capacity; a ring-type fan draws air through the radiator at low speeds to ensure stable operating temperatures for consistent performance and long engine life.
= Sturdy eight-plate hydraulic clutch.
= Cassette-type five-speed transmission features gear ratios that allow for quicker acceleration and excellent roll-on performance.
= Quiet and reliable shaft-drive system is virtually maintenance-free.

Chassis/Suspension
= Rigid aluminum upper triple-clamp and a 45mm Honda Multi-Action System (HMAS) cartridge front fork provide excellent suspension control in a wide range of riding conditions.
= The rear suspension incorporates a single shock, which mounts directly onto the swingarm. The shock offers 1.2 inches of spring preload adjustability.
= Large 310mm stainless-steel floating front brake discs and 316mm rear disc for ultimate stopping power.
= Wheels are three-spoke, U-section cast aluminum. The 5.0-inch-wide rear wheel sports a large, low-profile 170/60ZR-17 radial tire. The 3.5-inch-wide front wheel carries a 120/70ZR-18 radial tire.
Additional Features
= Full-coverage bodywork offers superb wind and weather protection, low noise and superior high-speed aerodynamics.
= Integrated lockable and detachable saddlebags hold 35 liters each. The saddlebags contain straps to limit bag opening to 90 degrees to better secure the contents. The straps are easily unbuckled when the bags are dismounted, permitting full access.
= Rugged, plastic-covered body-protector stays extend outward to protect the bodywork in case of a tip-over.
= Dual-section fuel tank places 5.5 gallons of fuel in the conventional tank location with an additional 2.2 gallons located in a sub-tank located low in the chassis. This results in an increase in fuel capacity and creates an even weight distribution for fuel.
= Electric fuel pump operates inside the sub-tank, providing consistent fuel pressure for the PGM-FI system.
= Headlight features dual lenses with twin-filament H4 low/high-beam bulbs and multi-reflectors.
= A convenient push button located on the left side of the fairing electrically adjusts the headlight angle over a 2.5-degree range.
= A locking left-side fairing pocket offers the carrying capacity of an automobile console; a weather-resistant vinyl flap covers the right-side pocket.
= Breakaway rearview mirrors minimize damage in the event of a tip-over.
= Convenient centerstand assist-lever folds neatly away when not in use.
= Integrated front and rear turn signals.
= Integrated ignition switch/fork lock. A single ignition key operates all locks.
= Non-transferable three-year, unlimited-mileage limited warranty.
